"It's doing research that I particularly like"

Marion Höhener, 19, has completed her training as a physics laboratory assistant at Empa this summer. She wants to make research her career and is already looking towards higher education.

"I wanted to do something concrete that I could be proud of"

After finishing high school, Rohat Sihyürek joined PSI as an apprentice polymechanic. There, the 20-year-old manufactured high-precision parts that are essential for Switzerland's largest research facilities.

"Communicating with a wider audience has taken me out of my bubble"

Trisha Stewart, 17, is one of around 170 young people doing an apprenticeship at ETH Zurich. She is currently involved in research into the immunology of yeast cells. The third-year biology laboratory assistant has also given online lectures on botany.

Parliament rejects ban on animal and human experimentation

The popular initiative against animal and human experimentation did not stand a chance in the summer session of parliament. Both the National Council and the Council of States rejected it without a dissenting vote. The Council of States also wants to discuss the role of science in a crisis in more detail. It has therefore referred a motion on the subject to its Science Committee.

“We have to ask some uncomfortable questions”

All human activities affect the landscape and ecology, even if we stop using nuclear energy and rely on renewable energy. Astrid Björnsen led the joint Energy Change Impact research programme of WSL and Eawag. It provides accurate data on the potential and availability of renewable energy in the country.

A cleaner science

Science helps us to analyse climate change and to act to limit its effects. But it also contributes to climate change, for example through the many trips scientists make to conferences or to visit colleagues.
